Bent door? First, make it safe.

A bumper at parking speed, a limb down in a storm, a door that buckled mid-travel — bent doors range from cosmetic to dangerous, and the first job is knowing which you have.

Assessing a bent garage door section for repair

Triage: what makes a bent door dangerous

A door that no longer runs true in its tracks, has a cracked or folded section, or has pulled a roller or hinge loose is not safe to keep cycling — each run can worsen the buckle or drop the door off its track. If yours is in that state, leave it where it is, keep clear, and call. A shallow dent in one panel that still runs straight and seals is a different, calmer conversation.

What can be repaired

Minor section bends can sometimes be straightened and reinforced with a strut — the steel brace fitted across a section to stiffen it, also the standard fix for a wide door that's begun to sag or crack at its top section. Struts buy real life for the right door. Creased, folded or torn metal is past straightening; that's a panel replacement (or a new door) conversation.

The honest fork

We'll show you the damage and the two paths: repair what's repairable, or replace the section/door when the metal has failed. Wind damage in the mountains often bends the door against its tracks hard enough to damage both — we check tracks, rollers and cables as part of the same visit, because the visible bend is rarely the whole story.

Questions, answered straight

I backed into the door. It's dented but still works. Can I leave it?

If it runs straight, seals, and the dent is shallow, it's cosmetic for now — but have the section checked: a crease is a stress point that can crack through with cycling, and dents at a section joint can start a buckle. A quick assessment beats a folded door.

What is a strut, and does my door need one?

A strut is a steel reinforcement bar fitted across the inside of a section. Wide doors and doors whose top section flexes when the opener pulls are the usual candidates. If your door's top section bows as it lifts, ask us to check it.

A tree limb hit the door in a storm. Who do I call first, you or insurance?

Make it safe first — if the door is compromised or the house is open, call us as an emergency to secure and assess. Photos of the damage before anything moves are what your insurer will want; take them from a safe distance.
