The E.L garage door blog
Real questions from Western North Carolina homeowners, answered the way we would answer them standing in your garage — what is safe to check yourself, what to never touch, and what a repair actually involves.
Straight answers
The series this blog is built on: real homeowner questions, answered straight.
Every post in this series starts as a real question. Homeowners ask them in Western North Carolina community groups and on Reddit — a spring snapped in the night, an opener that hums while nothing moves, a new door to buy and no straight answer on where to start. We answer the question where it was asked, and then the full answer is collected here, where it stays findable for the next neighbor with the same problem.
Two rules govern the series. No invented questions — every post traces to an ask a real homeowner made. And no sales script: if the honest answer is 'check this yourself in a minute,' that is the answer the post gives, even when it talks us out of a visit.
Next in the series: a snapped cable and a door stuck down in the cold — asked in a local group last winter, and the answer involves what not to force.
Your Garage Door Spring Broke. No, It Can't Just Be Rewound.
A bang in the night, a door that will not lift, and a hopeful question: can the spring just be rewound? Why the answer is no — and what happens instead.

The motor runs, nothing moves, and the door lifts fine by hand. That combination points somewhere specific — work this list before you blame the opener.
